Azusa Has Its Own Electric Utility

The first thing to know about electrical work in Azusa is that Southern California Edison usually isn’t the utility. Inside city limits, power comes from Azusa Light & Water, the city’s own Light & Water Department, which has operated a municipal electric utility since 1904. Edison’s transmission lines bring power into the city, but ALW serves the customers directly, and its own crews install and maintain the local system.

That matters on any job that touches the service. Under the City of Azusa’s electrical review process, service upgrades of 400 amps or more go through plan check, and the plans also have to be submitted to Azusa Light & Water for its review and approval. Left Coast Electric builds that review into the schedule from the start, so the utility step doesn’t surprise anyone at the end of the job. Properties just outside city limits are a different story: ALW can’t take on new customers outside its territory, so those sites are usually on SCE.

Electrical Work Across Azusa

Downtown and the Route 66 corridor

Older storefronts along Azusa Ave and Foothill Blvd, part of historic Route 66, often need a new service, panel and wiring before a restaurant or shop can open. We plan that work around neighboring tenants and street traffic. Tenant improvement electrical →

Near the Metro A Line stations

Azusa has two Metro A Line stations, Azusa Downtown and APU/Citrus College. Mixed-use and multifamily projects near transit need temporary construction power, meter banks and common-area lighting, all coordinated with ALW. Temporary power →

Industrial and business-park buildings

Three-phase services, equipment feeds, motor controls and high-bay LED lighting for the manufacturing, warehouse and contractor buildings in Azusa’s industrial areas. Power distribution →

Around the Azusa Pacific University campus

Businesses and rental housing that serve the university area often need service upgrades, lighting and life-safety circuits on tight academic-year deadlines.

Permits: Azusa Building Division

For addresses inside city limits, electrical permits come from the City of Azusa’s Building Division (Building and Safety), part of the Economic and Community Development Department at 213 E. Foothill Blvd. The city asks applicants to check with the Planning Division first to find out whether Design Review is required, and exterior electrical work can need Planning approval. The Building Division issues separate electrical permits and accepts plan submittals through an online portal once the application is filed and fees are paid.

Some addresses with an Azusa mailing address are in unincorporated Los Angeles County. Those go through LA County Public Works Building & Safety, and they may be on SCE instead of ALW. We confirm both the jurisdiction and the utility before we price the job.

Recent Work Down the Road: Quick Quack Car Wash

Follow Azusa Ave south out of Azusa and into Covina, and you reach 940 N. Azusa Ave, where we did the electrical for the ground-up Quick Quack Car Wash with general contractor Eleven Western Builders. It’s our closest named project to Azusa and a good example of how we handle commercial new construction from temporary power through final inspection.
